Whenever I make red velvet cake from scratch, the color always comes out red/brown marbled! Help!?

I follow the recipe precisely when it says to make a paste out of the cocoa and red dye. I have tried mixing it for a super long time, I've also tried putting the dye with the buttermilk and the cocoa with the flour.... every time comes out the same, though... swirly colors. Any suggestions?
