Files on desktop is taking forever to appear! (Macbook)?

I have a macbook and for some reason, Finder is 'not responding'.. I've tried relaunching but to no avail. So my question up above means that the files I saved onto my desktop are missing and the rainbow swirly thing is the only thing I can see. I also can't access my documents...whatsoever from the dock.
